“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: for length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.” Proverbs 3:1, 2
“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” I John 5:2, 3
“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.” Romans 3:31
“For not the hearers of the law are just before God; but the doers of the law shall be justified.” Romans 2:13
“And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou will enter into life, keep the commandments.” Matthew 19:17
We all have house rules for our children. We want our children to understand that they need to be responsible for helping to keep the house clean and orderly. We have house rules for them to protect them because we love them. We may require Johnny to take out the garbage, and Jim to mow the lawn, and Sally to dust the furniture, and Susan to vacuum. We may let them know that they have to be home at a certain time if they go out for the evening with their friends.
We expect our children to obey us and keep the house rules because they love us and love each other and want to be thoughtful and caring.
We do not have house rules to make our children miserable. We love them and hope to teach them that we all have to do our part in keeping the house looking nice and comfortable for all of us. We trust that when they are adults, they will be loving, helpful people and have the desire to work in their own homes and in the community. It certainly would help to make this world a better place, wouldn’t it?
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” I John 2:1-4
“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” Proverbs 28:9
“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law.” I John 3:4
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Revelation 22:14
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13
“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, we ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29
This world was created for us with such love. We are God’s children, and we are under his roof, so-to-speak. He is our heavenly Father and this world is our home. He has house rules for us to protect us because He loves us. He wants us to keep the house rules because we love each other and have respect for each other and for Him. His house rules are called the Ten Commandments, and they are found in Exodus chapter twenty.
God did not give us the Ten Commandments to make life miserable for us. They were given to us to help us remember that He is our heavenly Father and to love Him supremely and to have compassion, love and respect for our fellowmen.
What a wonderful world this would be if everyone kept the Ten Commandments.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14: 15-21
“The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.” Isaiah 42:21
The Ten Commandments Stand Forever
“The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and unrightness.” Psalm 111:7, 8
“And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.” Luke 16:17
“My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.” Psalm 89:34
“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.” Hebrews 8:10
“And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written, And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.” Exodus 32:15, 16
“…And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.” Exodus 34:28
“For I am the Lord, I change not…” Malachi 3:6
“…for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:17-19
(God’s House Rules For Us)
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore theLord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” Exodus 20:3-17
